    PhotoCan

Looking through the posts I've neglected to share the PhotoCan Project with this group. Esri Canada helped in the setup of this project as the ability for multiple users making edits to the same map is not a fully implement feature, yet. Esri developed a work-around that the students are using where they are, in reality, contributing to a GIS database and then using student specific query, they can see / edit, only their work. (yes, a clever student could figure out how to see all the pins - if they did that, they should get extra marks!).

Since this project involves a customized work-around by Esri, it's not a project we could "share" between school this year - but next year the possibilities are very interesting for multiple class participation.

    BookCan Project

My Grade 9 students are selecting a novel (set in Canada) today for the BookCan Project - increasing their geographical awareness of Canada by reading a novel.

The students will creating a book report from a geographical point of view. I'm currently working through exactly what the format for that assessment will be.

The link is to a list of the novels the students have choose from that are available in our school library.

If you are interested - we could connect groups of students based on reading the same novel and/or set in the same location / region.

The reason the project is call BookCan is because they are already working on another project called PhotoCan - increasing their geographical awareness of Canada through images.

The reading project I mentioned last time is getting started at the beginning of April. Anyone interested in connecting students based on the geographic region in which the novel is set? OR connect a student reading a novel with someone (one of your students) who lives in that region?
  • Mr. McAsh's avatar
Busy times. I'm moving forward, with the assistance of our Teacher/Librarian, with a project to have each student read a novel, set in Canada, and prepare a book report from a geographic perspective (as opposed to a book report they would write for an English class).

Perhaps this is an opportunity for students to connect? It would be great if my students connected with someone who actually lives in the region of Canada in which the novel they are reading is set. Another alternative would be to connect students who are reading the same novel (I can likely share the list of novels the students have access to in our library, I'd have to check with our Teacher/Librarian). Another option would be to connect students based on the region of Canada the book they are reading is set (regardless of the book).

If you are interested, reply to this post. Connecting our students on an informal basis can have tremendous educational benefits.

I've survived the first 2 days of CGC1D. You can follow what I'm doing with the link to the public page of the CGC1D Edmodo group in the post below. A huge shout-out to Craig Marlatt, a high school geography teacher who is now in school administration, for providing me with the materials that he used with his CGC1D classes. His generous sharing has significantly improved the quality of the lessons the students will be receiving this semester.

I spend time each day looking for resources. Below are some good links I found, and plan to use.

If any of you have ideas about how to connect our students, which is what the purpose of this group really is, please, provide input. I'm the newbie here!

I've been gathering resources at a more feverish pace as Thursday quickly approaches (Day 1 of CGC1D). The lack of response to my post about mapping apps has become somewhat mute as I found out last week that I will NOT be teaching the classes in a computer lab (as I originally thought I was). Plan B is the daily use the class set of iPods at our school. I'm also going to encourage students to BYOD. It will be interesting to see how many have devices. The iPod cart has it's own AirPort so I'll be letting the students connect to it. The school-wide WiFi requires authentication for "guests" (which I hope is done away with soon!). I've included the link to the "public" Edmodo page for the course.

Which mapping apps do you use /recommend for Grade 9 Geography students? I've included links to some of the ones I'm considering. As you can see, there are too many, and I'm sure the list isn't complete! I need your help (background - I'm teaching Grade 9 Geography for the first time in my "lengthy" career).

I start teaching Grade 9 Canadian Geogrphy starts on Thursday, Feb 2. Students are approaching me in hallway telling me they are looking forward to the class. I only wish I had some idea of what I'm going to do. I'm reaching out to this group. If any of you have experience with this course, I'd really appreciate your input, course outline, anything!
    • Mr. Fournier - Although I do not teach Geography as a separate course, we embed the themes together in Social Studies. One of the most successful themes is connecting physical regions and landforms of Canada with settlement patterns of First Nations and Europeans settlers. I will work on sending you some of the documents and activities soon!
    • Mr. McAsh - Welcome to the group. There may not be too many classes involved in this first year (hoping to continue and expand) and collaboration between educators and our students is all good!
    • Mrs. McEwan - Although I am teaching the history that precedes this course, studying Canadian's involvement in World War 1 is always a popular topic. I touch briefly on it in grade 8 but I know the students look forward to studying it more in grade 9.

Congratulations. This project is a success because you've joined. Through your action, you will be able to connect your students with other students in Canada.

To grow this project will take some effort. If each of us could personally connect with just one other teacher in another school.... Even if that person is in your geographical region of Canada, your region is not the same as others! The more participants we have, the greater the flexibility of this project.

If you are reading this on the public Edmodo page, use the link below to join the project. If you are new to Edmodo, you can create an account, and join this group at the same time!

Welcome to Connecting Canadian Students - A project to connect students Initially based on the study of Canadian Geography.

FYI - To allow non-Edmodians to see what this project is about, I plan to make all posts "public". If you haven't used the public tag, it posts items to a public website. For this group the URL is: http://dcvi.edmodo.com/public/fototo/group_id...
When you make a post, tag it a s"public", unless it is something than needs to stay within the group.

(why foto is in the URL - From Ocean To Ocean To Ocean)
